Day 93 - Last Day

So the past week has been quite a roller coaster. I think last time I left you I had just found out I needed a tetanus shot to register for classes and considered that the worst day in London. Well, it only got worse. My paralyzing fear of needles made for two very stressful and eventful days.

I picked Nicole up at the airport early on Wednesday and then planned to meet up with Aaron at the Marylebone campus to try and get the shot at health services. When we got there the lady said that she couldn't help us because we were abroad students and that they were closing for spring break. Not quite sure if it's a good idea to refuse abroad students but she gave us a card and sent us to a travel vaccine place over by the Regent Campus. Now I am annoyed because I mean I don't even want this shot and now they've got me going somewhere else to get it.

When we got there the woman said they couldn't give us the shot for school purposes, only travel purposes. Had we known this going in we would have found a way around this but we didn't we were just handed another card and sent in the direction of Tottenham Court. The Medicentre was at the top of a shopping centre....we kinda found that awkward. After Aaron and Nicole had to drag me up the 3 escalators the guy at the desk said it was no problem....until he said it was going to cost like $105. Now I mean come on, a shot I could get for free at home they were really going to charge me over a 100 bucks. Clearly I couldn't get it (ignoring the fact that I am again terrified). So this creepy soviet looking woman brings Aaron in and then like 25min later he's all set.

I decide to find a way around getting this shot in London. I put mom up to the task of handling things on the Babson front but there was no luck and I had to get ready for my Devising London performance. I was a mess. Here I am in London, my best friend is here, I'm about to do a show with my closest friends here and the others are coming to watch and I pretty much am on the verge of an aneixity attack. I was miserable. I just obsessed over this stupid little needle.

By the end of the night I was telling Nicole we were just going to go to the A&E (ER) and get it if not I would probably explode. That plan was short lived. Mom got a hold of the study abroad people and told me to call them in the morning and to not go to the A&E. Bittersweet news, I again was able to put this dreaded thing off but at the same time it was still making me miserable.

The show went on though. It was an...well...an experience. I'm glad it's over. I think the audience liked it and I swear never to make a fool of myself again. Afterwards the group slip up and Nicole, Meg, Laura, Jessy and I went to a place called Waxy O'connors. It was the coolest pub, like something out of Disney World. It was all themed and had a tree in it. It was awesome.

The next morning I had to pick John up from the airport. His dad sent him here last minute to meet with someone for his company. I was up by 5am and hating life. Between the tetanus and the fact that I had now woken up at 5am two mornings in a row to make the trek to Heathrow. It was all worth it to get to see him though. It's cool to be able to pick people up and then know where to go. It makes it feel like London is my city. Nicole had to catch up on sleep so I told her I would go pick him up and take care of the shot before she woke up. This seemed like a good plan except for the fact I didn't take into consideration the luck I had been having so far.

I got a call from Butler who told me I had to call the insurance people to figure out where to go and that they were calling the University to see what information they could get from them. Now I have no idea what insurance card they were talking about or where to find one. Luckily the gang all knew and met up with me at Cafe Nerro. I used Megs because well she's a girl and if I had used Aaron's ID number it would have been strange. Of course they are based out of the United States and were not open when I called. Not a good sign. So I waited, I went and found my own insurance information and woke up Nicole.

Once the insurance place opened they were of no use. They told me I wasn't covered for vaccinations and that was it. They couldn't help me find a place or anything. Thank god for Aaron and Nicole who agreed to then march off the the A&E with me just to get it over with. I mean what could go wrong now, just get to the hospital and they'll stick me. Hospitals love to do things like that.

After waiting in the waiting room surrounded by the bloody and wounded I hit yet ANOTHER wall. There was going to be a 2 1/2 hour wait and the nurse suggested trying two other hospitals. Luckily I mean it's London so there's lots to see which means Nicole got the tour via medical centers. I mean we passed a lot of stuff like Big Ben and the Eye.

Victory seemed to be getting closer which obviously meant I had to put the ordeal off even more by having lunch. We found a Ned's Noodle Bar which was amazing....only problem is that it doesn't take very long to eat.

We based our next target on the bus ride. The St. Guys was closer so we went there. The Minor Injuries place was empty and I was positive I would finally have everything over and done with. I go up to the desk and told the woman I needed a Tetanus Shot. She in return told me I didn't. I protested saying according to America I did so she went and got someone more important to turn me down. I guess the WORLD (to make sure they knocked me down off my american pedastool) Health Association has decided you only need 5 of these shots in your life and then rattled off the dates I was suppose to have gotten them. I tried to reason with her saying that I couldn't register for classes but nope nothing.

Now I am, in the words of Laura, FLABERGHASTED! Now not only can I not find a place but now I am being refused. I mean I don't want it to begin with. I had to get it though. Mom talked to the Health Services people and there was no way around it. A lot of Abroad students were in the same boat. That annoyed me I mean why didn't they tell us we needed it before we left. I feel bad for the kids in more foreign places than London. I mean there are many places in the world where I wouldn't let them stick me with needles. So Mom told me to just go pay for the shot at the place Aaron went to and get it over with. I had no more excuses....I had to go. We got on the tube (which I only had a bus pass so now I am even paying more to travel to the stupid place) and headed over to Tottenham. I was in my typical "right before a needle" state, numb and unresponsive....freaking out on the inside. Here I am in a foreign country about to get a shot....my biggest fear in the world. I mean I'm pretty sure I held my moms hand or sat on her lap last time I got one.

So I am playing the scene over in my head. Being called in by the creepy soviet woman and her not sterilizing anything and just jabbing me in the arm. For the first time though my luck started changing. This Irish male nurse in designer jeans calls me into the exam room. Even better he asks if Nicole wants to come....clearly I needed her too. It was great, we talked and listened to his amazing accent. He was the best nurse ever. He hid the needle as long as he could...I mean it was painless. I'm pretty sure the most painless needle ever. To make things even better I was only charged $80 for it. So in the end everything worked out. This is only because I have the most amazing friends though who would spend 2 days walking around London with me going from health centre to hospital.

The next step was to sign up for classes. At first I wasn't so lucky but as of now I have the original schedule I wanted and only have class 2 days a week next semester. It will be exhausting but I'll now have more time to sleep.

So right now it is 6:30am. I've been up since 5:45. I'm miserably sick and haven't been able to sleep the past couple of days. The idea of being on a plane for 6 hours is not so appealing but I'm so excited to get back to the states I think I'll deal with it. Nicole is waking up in a half hour to get ready to head back to the airport. This trip just flew by and it's been amazing getting to hang out with her. I have a lot more to say about the week but am beginning to lose concentration so I will have to update once I get home. I have a lot to do today. I need to finish packing and because I never did the paper that is due the 30th I have to go photocopy some stuff at the library. Maybe I'll just go shower now.

Post Later.

P.S. - I'll be in FL sooooo Soon!!!

Day 85

So this has been the worst day in London...well with exception to the first night I got here.

It started this morning when I got on campus in order to register for my Babson classes. I had them all picked out and was ready to go. The only problem was when I clicked the button to register it said I had a medical hold on my account. It turns out I need a tetanus shot. The worst part is they won't just clear my account and believe me when I say I'll get it when I get back to the comforts of the United States. No, I have to go tomorrow or else I risk not getting into any of the classes I need to take. For those of you who don't know, I am TERRIFIED of shots. I would do practically anything if it meant never having to get another one ever again. I flip out and obsess beforehand and there is even the occasional hive breakout....it's bad. So now I am in a foreign country and I have to go to the school health center and get one. Luckily Aaron (well not luckily for Aaron) has to get one too so he's going to meet up with me which will hopefully help the freaking out factor. Nicole will be there too....hopefully.

Her flight got cancelled so to add to not being able to register and having to get a shot she isn't here yet. I have to get her at 6:50am tomorrow morning and considering I average going to bed at around 3:30 and have to leave here at 5:50...there is a lack of sleeping in there.

Other than that just stupid stuff happened that didn't need to....and basically any day I find out I need to get a shot is the worst day of my life.

I did have some fun though today. After turning in my Leisure paper which I finally managed to finish on Sunday, Laura and I went to get Meg to go see our friend who is one of the Queens Guards who was suppose to be on duty. He turned out not to be but afterwards we still went to Caffe Nero and then fed the birds for a long while. It was beautiful out so it was really cool.

We found out our guard friend was actually working tonight so we went back out to see him. It was like going backstage Disney and seeing the characters with their heads off. You watch the movies and learn these guards to be stone cold people who can't laugh or smile or anything....and I mean technically they shouldn't. Our friend Jack though talked to us and smiled and even kissed his girlfriend...I mean of course it was all done very subtlety but still....took away a little bit of the magic. It's funny though, they're all just 18 year old kids with swords.

Afterwards we walked up to Regent St and got Chinese and then Waffles both of which were amazing. The waffles here are soooo good.

Now I'm just nervous about tomorrow and don't know when I will get to sleep. I need to wake up in like 5 hours to shower and such. I'm excited for Nicole to get here. John will be here too for a little. Kinda a random business trip with his dad.

Alright, time to get into bed. Post Later.

Day 83

So this week has been haunted by the 2 papers I have yet been able to accomplish. Mainly because I am a procrastinator and I mean face it, it's my last couple weeks in London and there are just other things I would rather do.

Tuesday was our last Leisure and Recreation class. We didn't make it through the whole one. It's taught by two professors and after Claire (our favorite teacher ever) did a recap from our field trip we had to bounce. Meiko was gonna lecture after they gave us a break and shes just horrible and wouldn't have actually taught us anything.

Since we had so much extra time we decided to have a Fajita Night. Aaron came back with us to Wigram and we went grocery shopping. We got soo much food. Even worse....Aaron and I made sure none of it went to waste. Our simple little Fajita Night turned into a In it to Win it Fajita Night. I have never been in so much pain from eating. 5 fajitas later and all Aaron and I could do was lie on the common room couches and moan. It was miserable yet amazing all at once. We're gonna have to continue the tradition at Babson.

Afterwards I just laid in bed unable to move....a good excuse for putting off my paper more.

Wednesday was the last real Devising London class. It was exhausting. We did a rough run of the show that took almost the whole class and she didn't give us a break. I liked our yoga though. I'm starting to get the hang of it....too bad it's over. The show is this Wednesday which is crazy. I hope we're prepared. I think Aaron and I might try to get her to cut one of our skits. After class Jessy, Aaron and I went to Subway and then to the Library. I give myself a little credit for trying to do some work. I managed to check some books out which was half.....well maybe like an eighth of the battle.

Thursday I had a presentation in London Theatre. I think it went pretty okay. I did it on the Drum Revolve at the National Theatre. OH! I went to see Much Ado Again. I might have already posted that, I'm not sure. I only stayed through half because I bought a standing ticket but it was still pretty good. I got enough notes to write my paper for that class. I love the National. I wish I had time to see one more show there. So yea the presentation went well for that class. I'm pretty much done with it. I don't think I'm going to go next week because I will have turned in all my work for it and Nicole will be here!!!

After class I went to the Library and did some work before Tourism Development which I didn't make it to. It was just gorgeous and Laura convinced me just to go back to the dorm. I hung out in her room because she has windows and it was just great. Nice and sunny and kinda warm with a slight breeze.

We were going to go out that night but instead decided to go shopping over by Oxford Circus. There were a bunch of stores I hadn't been to so we went and browsed. Afterwards we went to Starbucks because our plan is to steal complete sets of the mugs they use (I know this is immoral in some ways but I mean common they overcharge for their drinks to begin with and then the Americans end up paying double with the conversion, we deserve to take the mug too). Unfortunetly, they were only giving out paper take away cups. When we got back to Wigram we just kinda hung out. We hang out in Laura's a lot. We're here right now.

Yesterday, Laura, Meg and I thought it would be a good idea to go for a run. I mean it wasn't a horrible idea. Meg and I kept a leisurely pace in our sweats while Laura showed off and ran like 3 times as many laps as us in her special running spandexy pants. We went to Starbucks after to do work....we didn't really get any done but we did manage to get our mugs. I got a baby espresso one....it's SO cute.

It was club night so after showering, making dinner, hanging out, and waiting for people to come over we headed to Strawberry Moon. Laura's friend Kayla came and her boyfriend Jack who's from London and one of the Queen's Guards...Wilson came too. After a little while at the club this old guy comes in who I had sworn I had seen before. I thought he could be famous but I wasn't sure. I kinda just forgot about it until the DJ goes "Let's welcome the one and only George Michaels." I FLIPPED out. I was scream like a tweenager at a NYSNC concert. Mainly because I was so excited to tell mom when I got home. It was SOOOO much fun. We danced like crazy. Everyone was singing along and going nuts. So he then goes on to say he was going to bring a special guest and starts singing a song of Elton Johns. Now Jack told us earlier that Elton John goes to Strawberry Moon so I start freaking out even more. But like 2 seconds later my entire night was ruined as the WORST Elton John impersonator comes out on stage. Then I started to questioning my buddy George as well. I was so sad. When I got home I checked online and sure enough on the calendar last night was a George Michaels impersonator. I mean I'll give him credit....he was REALLY good. I was really excited though thinking I was getting a random impromptu concert from a famous person. I feel kinda stupid, luckily though I think people were too preoccupied to notice me. It was still really fun.

Today was the Cambridge Oxford Boat Race. Aaron, Laura and I headed out at like 4 for it. It was really gross out which didn't make it an excellent day for deal with crowds of drunk people on the bank of a river. It was still cool to see. It made me wish I still rowed. I'm glad I can say I went. I think Oxford won...I don't really remember. There were so many people it was overwhelming. Other than that we've pretty much just been hanging out in Laura's room. I managed to write like 800 words of my paper and have a better idea of where it's going which is good. We just had a McDonalds break. We did the math and figured its cheaper to get 2 happy meals than a regular and you can get two drinks that way and since we get bottled water I still have one to bring to the library tomorrow.

I need to get my paper done tomorrow because I still have another to write and Nicole gets here Tuesday. Soooo much work. I can't wait to be done. Okay so it's not that much work but it's really hard to concentrate. I only have like 11 days left in London....it's going by soooo fast. Okay I'm gonna work a little more and then head to bed. Tomorrow is daylight savings time so I am going to be 5 hours ahead of home again.

Post later!

Day 78

So the London Zoo was a bust. When we went on Friday our coupons didn't work and then on Saturday it was just miserable out. On Friday we did end up at Camden Market though which was pretty cool. There was a big fire a month or so ago so most of it was shut down. It was just rows of little booths selling pretty much anything. I'm going to take Nicole and Aaron there when Nicole gets here. It will make for a fun and probably expensive afternoon. I already did my window shopping, now I have to decide what to get.

Saturday Aaron, Meg and I went to the awesome little burrito place for dinner. We found out a Fat Face is opening a few doors down from it. Fat Face is the most amazing store ever plus with the burrito place it's only a Cafe Nerro away from being Aaron's and mine dream location.

Yesterday was my first Easter not at home. It was sad. I woke up at noon and had Pop Tarts. I basically did work all day. Aaron and I met up at a Starbucks and were rather productive but I'm no where near done. I'm going to do more today hopefully finish up 2 of my assignments but then I still have a 3000 word essay and a 2000 word portfolio thing. I have till next Tuesday but I want to not have to worry about anything over the weekend. It's my second to last here and its the Oxford Cambridge Crew Race which I'm really excited for.

Alright, time to get everything together and maybe go back to Starbucks or Cafe Nerro to get some work done.

Post Later

8 Days Till Nicole Comes.
16 Days Till I'm Back in the States.

Friday, 21 March 2008

Real Quick.....Pigeons make the worst noise ever. I know this because there is a big ugly one outside my window. I want to throw something at it but with my luck someone will see and I'll get kicked out of housing.

Day 75

I can tell I have a lot of work to do because I've begun posting more. I've always used blogging as a way to put off work. I guess I feel productive as long as I am typing a lot.

I had my last London Theatre class yesterday. There are technically 2 more but next week I have to give a presentation and the following I can skip so lecture wise I'm all done. Only 4 people showed up to the class and I was the only one who had seen Much Ado. That meant the teacher and I had a 25min conversation about the play in front of the 3 other people.

I liked my Theatre class....I think. I realized that I really didn't learn anything here. Since they just give you 2 assingments and much of what's said in class doesn't even apply to the assignments you can leave here without actually absorbing anything the teacher says.....except for the assignment due dates. It's a nice enough way to get through school as long as I don't royally mess up and fail a class.

We went out last night to a pub in South Kensington. It wasn't too bad, we made the most of it. We got there early to avoid paying the cover so the night started off slow with no one there. There was a band. It was two guys who I'm pretty sure came straight from a Carnival Cruise....it was pretty hilarious. I particularly enjoyed the calypso-ish version of Hotel California.

On the way back we stoped at Flames....a real dodgy little all night food stuff. I had some fries, they were good.....the ketchup not so much....but it did the job of trying to absorb the caffeine in my system (if thats even possible).

We're about to head out to the London Zoo (Laura, Callie, Meg and I). We have 2 for one passes that we got off our boxes of Frosted Flakes. It looks pretty big so it should be fun. After I want to try and get to the library....we'll see. I REALLY need to get to work.

Alright, gotta head out. Post Later.
